Gueuze beer is a specific form of lambic beer, and lambic beer is one of the weirdest, wildest and oldest styles of beer in the world. Lambic beer is naturally fermented by airborne wild yeasts. The result is sour, tart and strange, and tastes nothing like beer. Gueuze is a mix of old and young lambics, matured for two to three years in casks, and then blended to produce what has been called the ‘Champagne of beer’ – but it could easily be described as marmite. This one is from the only gueuzerie in Wallonia and, suffice to say, it is an extremely good example of the style. Tread carefully though.
